Flower Power was a slogan used during the late `1960's and early 1970's as a symbol of
passive resistance and nonviolence.


It is rooted in the opposition movement to the Vietnam War



1. What is the flower power slang ?


-The phrase stemmed from the flowers the iconoclasts often wore to demonstrate their pacifism.


-Devotees were flower children or flower people, hippies were also know as the flower-power
generation.


-The noun youthquake also appeared in the mid-1960's to further describe the movement.



2. What is the concept of flower power?


-Coined in 1965 by acclaimed poet and voice of his generation Allen Ginsberg, "flower power" 

was used to inspire a movement in which anti-war demonstrators focused on positive values

such as peace and love instead of brute force.



3. What is an example of flower power?


-Hippies embraced the symbolism of Flower Power by dressing in clothing with embroidered

flowers and vibrant colors. 


-Hippies were often seen in public wearing flowers in their hair and distributing flowers to

people in public.



4. What was the hippie era called?


The counterculture movement was the result of a generation that rejected social norms

and traditions of previous decades.



-A new identity was born at the start of the counterculture movement in the late 1960's.

The movement criticized consumerism, promoted peace, and yearned for individualism.



5. What does the flower mean to hippies?


The floral themed decorations symbolized ideals of universal belonging, peace, and love.



-The mass media picked up on the term and used it to refer in a broad sense to any hippie.



6. What is the slogan of the hippies?


-"Make love, not war" was the slogan the encapsulated two of the main ideas of the 1960's 

counterculture, pease and love as opposed to war and subjugation.

-Most embrace the butterfly as a symbol of rebirth as it makes a transformation to a new stage

of life.


-This metamorphosis represents the spiritual evolution of the human soul.



8. What is the flower of power symbol?


-The sunflower represents power, strength and positivity.


-The orchid symbolizes strength, beauty, and rare power.

-The Gladiolus is known for its association with strength of character and determination.



9. Who are the famous Flower Power people?


-Flower power also came into mainstream with Scott McKenzie's 1967 hit "San Francisco"


with the line "if you are going to San Francisco be sure to wear flowers in your hair."
