Oxymorons Gentle Trampling...Lesson 35

 Oxymoron- is a self-contradicting word or group of words. A paradox is a statement or argument

 that seems to be contradictory or to go against common sense, but that is yet or perhaps true.


1. less is more- A vanilla ice cream with light sugar sprinkles is considered less is more.


2. accurate estimate- The car repairman gave me an accurate estimate for my car tune up.


3. alone together- When we go to the lake for our annual vacation, we love being alone together.


4.awfully good-  The wedding banquet served an awfully good assortment of food choices.


5. bittersweet- Our departure from our Rome vacation was bittersweet because we had to say farewell to our grandparents.


6. climb down-  I helped the kid to climb down from the ladder.


7. close distance- The campground is a close distance from the park parking lot.


8. cheerful pessimist- The president appears to be a cheerful pessimist about the lack of support from his political team. 


9. definite maybe- When I asked my mother for a bicycle for Christmas, she gave me a definite maybe.


10. eloquent silence- The guru's eye contact produces an eloquent silence.


11. small crowd- The could be considered a small crowd in front of the movie theater.


12. Taking the last flight could be my only choice.


13. The Chihuahua would be the pretty ugly dog at the Kennel Show except for the Cacapoo wining the "pretty ugly" ribbon.


14 old news-. Old news should be something we are used to when speaking to our grandparents.


15. absent presence- The stories of my grandparents linger as an absent presence during Christmas time.


16. cruel kindness- The football coach demonstrated a form of cruel kindness to get his team to succeed.


17. devout atheist- As a devout,atheist, the comedian said: "God made me an atheist".

18 freezer burn-. Because I didn't wrap the steaks properly, they got freezer burn and tasted stale.

freezer burn- To prevent freezer burn for ice cream turn the container upside down.

19. found missing- After more than a week, my dog was found missing the the shopping mall,

20. festive tranquility- The closing party, for the health retreat weekend, was filled with festive tranquility as everyone joined in the singing of  the sentimental tune: "You Are My Sunshine".

21. friendly takeover- The new investors of the dress company where able to create a friendly takeover by paying the company 50% over their asking price.

22. a near miss- Not marrying my high school sweetheart could be considered a near miss-"dodging a bullet", when he turned out to be a man that married 3 times in 10 years. 

23. cool passion- The actress, portraying the spy in the movie, projected a silent, inscrutable personality laced with cool passion. 

24. brisk vacancy-In the summer, the AirBNB's in Big Sur have brisk vacancies because of the demand for rentals. 

25. comfortable misery-The Covid 19 Pandemic has put some people in a state of comfortable misery with demands like mandatory masks. 

26 silent speech A silent speech by cartoon character Homer Simpson stated: "You stay out of my dreams-all my stuff is in there."

27. invisible footprints- The bear left invisible footprints as it traveled on top of the scattered pine cones in the forest.

28. clothed bare- I was felt clothed bare with the minerals in the health spa jacuzzi.

30. terrible best- The coyote screeched its terrible best as it howled at the moon.

31. caged free- The bird remained caged free in the bird sanctuary until its wing healed. 

32. original copy- I would have given you my original copy but it got caught in the photocopier.

33. big baby- The actor acted like a big baby as he sucked his thumb on stage.

34. virtual reality-It was recommended by the tour guide, that we should wear our virtual reality helmets to enjoy the adventure ride at Hollywood studios.

35. earth angel-Because of her generous nature, she could be considered an earth angel.

36. tragic comedy- The play was a tragic comedy that "pulled on our heart strings" as it went from laughter to sadness.

37. seriously funny- As the comedian was seriously funny as he spoke about the protecting the grizzly bear from extinction.

38. open secret- It was an open secret that the school principal was leaving at the end of the first semester.

39. act naturally- So we wouldn't give away the surprise birthday party for our friend, we pretended to act naturally during dinner.

40. pretty bad- The showcased art work by the new artist was pretty bad because it as presented on cardboard.

A Simile is a literary device that compares two things in an interesting and vivid way. Words such as "like" and "as' are used to compare two ideas. 1. He was as quiet as a mouse As he entered his father's hospital room, he was as quiet as a mouse. 2. smelling like a rose After winning the lawsuit, she walked out the court house smelling like a rose and waving her hands in the air with joy. 3.
