Georges Seurat (Paris France December 2, 1859- March 29, 1891)- Sunday on the Grand Jatte 1884

French Post Impressionist-Neo Impressionist.. He is best known for devising painting techniques known as "Pointillism",
Seurat was fascinated by a range of scientific ideas about color, form, and expression.  He believed that lines tending in certain directions, and colors of a particular warmth or coolness, could have a particular expressive effects. The painting shows members of different social classes participating in various park activities.  The tiny dots of multi-colored paint allow the viewer's eye to blend colors optically rather than having the colors physically blended on the canvas.  It took him over two years to complete the 10' wide painting.  He did over 60 drawings/ studies of people in the park to prepare for the painting.  The painting can be seen at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Diego Rivera may have been inspired by Seurat's painting including the title, and classes of people together.
